Pulling It All Together

Once you know how to report your income, deductions, exemptions, and the special tax breaks and credits you might be entitled to in your business or personal life, it's time to finish off your tax return and calculate the amount of tax you owe.

  • Calculating your tax explains how to pull everything together and calculate the tax amount, so you can determine the amount of your refund (or the amount you'll have to send in to the government). It also discusses two other types of taxes you may have to pay: payroll taxes on household employees, and the alternative minimum tax.
  • Dealing with the IRS covers the mechanical issues of when and where to file your tax return, how to get an extension, how to figure your quarterly estimated tax bill, and offers some tips on dealing with IRS audits.
