Nondeductible Moving Expenses

The following are now considered nondeductible expenses, although you may remember that some of them were deductible as moving expenses under prior law. If your employer reimburses you for any of these expenses, the reimbursements are taxable (and your employer should add them to your taxable income, as shown in Box 1 of your W-2 Form).

  • any part of the purchase price of your new home
  • car license plates, stickers, or other registration
  • drivers' licenses
  • expenses of breaking or getting a lease
  • expenses of buying or selling a home
  • home improvements to help sell your home
  • loss on the sale of your home
  • losses from disposing of club memberships
  • meal expenses
  • mortgage prepayment penalties
  • pre-move househunting trips
  • real estate taxes
  • refitting carpets and draperies
  • security deposits
  • storage charges other than those incurred in a 30-day period between when your goods were moved, and when they arrived at the new home
  • temporary living expenses
